CHRISTIAN PARENTING [PART I]

Saturday, April 28, 2012 by Joseph Agbi Leave a Comment

CHRISTIAN PARENTING by PASTOR GODWIN OKAFOR
The other time, I responded to a father’s concern that his kids do not have any interests in the things of God. He had wanted to know how others whose kids seem to have greater interests in the things of God have achieved their successes.
By God’s grace, and as ministerial time permits, I intend to share some spiritual insights which the LORD has enabled me to gather from His word over the years I have been on the pilgrim’s journey and in ministry.
The task of bringing up godly kids is a huge one, and lack of knowledge of God’s mind on this has resulted in all sorts of spiritual mishaps in this venture. So many Christian homes with beautiful Christian couples have made complete shipwreck of parenting.
In this first write up on Parenting Tips, I wish to call the attention of Christian parents that ours is a spiritual walk, and anything we do, including parenting, must be guided by spiritual principles. And since the spiritual knowledge of the Christian comes from the word of God (John 6:63), we must turn often to it, to discover the foundation of raising godly kids.
However, the fundamental question we need to deal with, first and foremost, is: How many Christians are spiritual, or how many Christian parents raise their kids according to God’s mind on the issue? I hope I will not be misunderstood here. Knowledge of the Bible, “the letter” of it, does not suffice. The application of God’s word holds the key in making godly homes, and then raising godly kids in such godly homes. The formula could go like this: godly couples = to godly homes; godly homes = godly kids. And of course, godly kids = godly society, et cetera.
I have seen may Christian homes who started their journey with carnal considerations, thereby violating God’s rules of holiness in starting up godly families. One of these is the placing of emphasis on what a man has accumulated before proposing marriage to a Christian lady, and in fact, his capability to support the carnal needs after the marriage. What of the Christian man who looks for beautiful Christian sisters who work in banks or other such places, have cars, or who must be well educated and have rich parents.
Or the more sinful ones (in our sight), of those who want to ensure that the intending couples are “compatible” (whatever that means), before marriage. What of those who want to make sure that the lady would have children for the family after marriage? I have been told of ladies who would make sure that their future husbands could get them pregnant before they agree to marry them.
Let me ask us, would God’s favour rest in such homes later, when they face the challenge of unruly or ungodly kids? When the foundation of the home is destroyed from the onset, why hope to raise godly children? The “god” the couple served before marriage would certainly seek to dominate the home thereafter. (See Psalm 11:13). What can the righteous do? Repent, do restitution, and ask God for mercy, and ask Him to show you how to remedy the situation. Surely, such children would have encounters with Jehovah, if their parents seek the LORD in repentance.
I will continue from here in my next write up. I appreciate those who are concerned in this issue of Christian Parenting, especially Sister Emem, with that broad smile. Remain blessed all of you.

THE CREATION

By David Agbi

INTRODUCTION

In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. That was the first miracle of the bible. Because He made us, we should praise him. He has seen us since we were born and helped us. If God has helped us to survive this earth, we have no reason not to praise God.

OUTLINES:
HOW THE WORLD WAS MADE
FIRST HUMAN BEINGS

HOW THE WORLD WAS MADE

God made the world in 6 days. The first command He said was, “Let there be light” and there was light. Can you believe that! He just said that and it happened. God divided the light from the darkness and called the light “day” and called the darkness “night” [Gen.1:4-5]. Then the second day, he made a firmament which divided the waters from the waters. The third day, He told the waters to gather unto one place and let the dry land appear. He called the dry land earth and the gathered water seas. Next, He told the earth to bring forth grass and trees to bring forth fruit [Gen 1:11-12]. God did all these things from making the stars to making animals and these were all very big events.

FIRST HUMAN BEINGS

On the sixth day, that’s when God created human beings. He said “Let us make man in our own image” [Gen 1:26-27]. God also said that they will rule over the fish of the sea and the fowl of the air and all the animals on the earth. The first human being was made out of dust and called Adam. He was in the Garden of Eden. He saw that Adam was alone so he made him to sleep. God took a rib out of Adam and made a woman. God said she would be called woman, because she was taken out of man [Gen.2:21-24]. God named her Eve. God gave them the Garden of Eden. They could eat from any tree except the one in the middle. They got tempted by a serpent and sinned, so the earth was cursed and people had to work if they needed something.

CONCLUSION

Just because the earth was cursed doesn’t mean that you can’t go to heaven. If you believe that Jesus Christ is Lord, become a Christian and repent of your sins, you can go to heaven and be blessed. So give your heart to Jesus and repent of your sins and you will be saved.

WHY GOD LOVED DAVID

WHY GOD LOVED DAVID

BY DAVID AGBI

INTRODUCTION

God loved David so, so much because he was a man after God’s heart. God also loved David right back. So there was a lot of bonding between the two. David would do anything God said and God blessed him. This lesson will help you to go after God’s heart in Jesus Name.

OUTLINES:
PRAISES TO GOD
GLORIFIED GOD
GOD CAN LOVE AND BLESS YOU TOO

PRAISES TO GOD

David sang praises to God whenever he could and that’s one reason God loved David. He didn’t just sing when he was in trouble or when something bad was happening. He sang all the time. Also, he praised God so much, it became a habit and God blessed him so much to the extent that he became king over Judah and eventually, over Israel. If he can find time to praise God we can too because He made us in His own image [Gen. 1:26-31].

GLORIFIED GOD

David would glorify God all the time. He built temples for the people of Israel to worship God and made sacrifices to Him. It didn’t end there. He would give glory to God in every situation, even the bad ones. God blessed David for that and gave him strength to take over cities like Zion and Jerusalem and made them to be cities of God, not for himself. He didn’t hesitate if God said something and defeated any people that were in his way to do what God said [1 Sam. 17: 40-58]. God loved him so much for that too.

GOD CAN LOVE AND BLESS YOU TOO

God can bless you too if you praise Him and give glory to Him. God loved David and He can love you too if you did what David did. He praised God, built temples, glorified Him and did whatever God told him to do. If you do what David did, God will give David’s blessings to you and will help you in any thing you need help with.

CONCLUSION

David was a man after God’s heart and that’s what God liked about David. If you do what David did, God will bless you. So don’t just stand there! Go out and let people know there is a God that is alive!

Stir up the Gift of God That is in You

Saturday, August 6, 2011 by Joseph Agbi Leave a Comment

Stir up the Gift of God That is in You

When somebody has a gift and it is not used, it becomes lost. Instead of excellence, mediocrity sets in. In the parable of the talents, Jesus said the person with one gift that did not use it; the gift will be taken away and given to the person that used his gift to profit the Kingdom of God. God has endowed every person with one ability or the other. In the body of Christ, there are many gifts we can key ourselves into. When you have a coal fire except you fan it continuously, it quenches. God says do not quench the embers of fire of the Spirit. In 2 Tim. 1:5-7, the apsotel Paul addressing Timothy(Paul’s son in the faith) said :

5When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. 6Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. 7For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Also in Rom. 12:3-8, Paul addressing the Romans said,
3For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. 4For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: 5So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. 6Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; 7Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; 8Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.

You either stir up the gift you have or it becomes extinguished. Many things can cause you to experience decline in your spiritual life. They include the love of the world, lust of the eyes and lust of the flesh. The Holy Spirit is grieved when we interrupt His move in our lives by our careless living. Paul speaking to the Thessalonians, said, 19Quench not the Spirit [1 Thess. 5:19].

Rather than quenching the spirit we should quench the work of Satan. How does somebody quench the Spirit or how do people reduce the embers of fire we have for God’s work? By ignoring Him, that is, ignoring His promptings; not paying attention to your spiritual life; not being led by the spirit; leading a carnal life; following after the works of the flesh; not living in love; and being slack spiritually. There are so many ways. What we should be quenching are the works of the enemy, that is, arrows of the enemy fired at us or targeted at other believers to instigate their downfall.

Eph. 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Prayer for Spiritual Empowerment
1. Every arrow of the wicked fired at my spirit, be extinguished.

GOOD AND BAD CONSCIENCE:

BY

DAVID AGBI

Text: Matt. 4:1-11

INTRODUCTION

There are 2 types of conscience in your body. Those are the good and bad conscience. The good conscience listens to God and the bad one listens to the devil. Imagine you are falling off a building. Something is holding you back and that is your good conscience. At the same time something is pushing you forward. That is your bad conscience. It is left there for you, but which one will you choose? It is a tough choice. Let this study give you some tips in Jesus’ name. Amen.
