The Rock that is higher than I
Psalm 61:1-8 1Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. 2From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. 3For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. 4I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah. 5For thou, O God, hast heard my vows: thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name. 6Thou wilt prolong the king’s life: and his years as many generations. 7He shall abide before God for ever: O prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him. 8So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows.
A huge rock could be compared in strength to a concrete bunker that people hide for protection in times of war. You are at a vantage point when you are protected by a rock or mountain, because a rock signifies something that is stable and unshakeable. When you are faced with the issues of life that overwhelm you, who do you look or run to for help? Go to Jesus because He is the sure foundation. He is the solid rock of ages on which you should build your hope and trust. When we build our lives on Christ, we become unshakeable and immovable. We would not be as the shifting sand without strength overwhelmed and swept away by flood waters [Matt. 7:24-27].
You may wish to compare your life to some bible characters and see how they overcame challenging issues of life. For example, sensing persistent danger, David hid himself in clefts of rocks and caves from king Saul, his avowed enemy, who planned to kill him. His life was spared. Sin and fear will expose a person so he cannot hide in the rock for protection. There is no account David was living in sin and staying within clefts of rocks kept him and his army protected from Saul.
When you trust in Christ He not only becomes your Rock, but you become a rock yourself, because you have your origin in Him.
Isaiah 51:1 reads, Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the Lord: look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged.

Psalm 31:1-4: 1In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness. 2Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me. 3For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me. 4Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength. 5Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth.
