Sweet Sleep: By Esther Agbi
I lay down and slept, yet I woke up in safety, for the Lord was watching over me. Psalm 3:5 [New living Translation]
There are many things we usually take for granted. One of them is the ability to sleep and wake up. The Psalmist has made us to understand that it is not by any effort of ours that we go to bed and we are up the next morning. It is by the mercies of the Almighty God. Having a place to rest our heads is one thing, then, falling asleep is another. There are some people who do not have homes or houses they go to at the end of the day. It is a pitiable condition to be in. That shall not be our portion in Jesus’ name.
One day as I was working in the pharmacy, a lady came in to pick up her medication. After drinking it, she asked, can I sit for a few minutes before leaving? I gave a positive answer, absolutely yes! She had not sat down for more than three minutes before she started to snore. I said to the lady working with me, this patient must be very, very tired. Why does she not go home to sleep instead of having a short nap here in the Pharmacy? She quickly answered and said that is what we mean by being “homeless”. The patient has no place she could call her home. She wanted to enjoy the comfort of the air conditioned room for a brief moment because it was very hot that day (+ 30 degree centigrade)
Some have homes, but can not sleep. We are told that when you can not sleep, begin to count sheep, in the process of counting, you fall asleep. I have never counted sheep, maybe it works for some, I don’t know. While sleeping, different kinds of spiritual activities take place. No little wonder the bible says that while men slept, the enemy came in and sowed tares.
We sleep in safety, why? Because, God watches over us. He protects us from evil arrows flying by night. When he sees that we have been revitalized, he wakes us up.
What a great reassurance to know that God, your creator does not only know you, but he watches over you while you sleep, and much more, he gives you sweet sleep. My prayer for you is that your sleep will always be sweet as you lie down under His mighty wings of Protection.
As said by Prophet Jeremiah:
26 At this, I woke up and looked around. My sleep had been very sweet. [Jer. 31 v26, NLT]
