Mercy and Grace

Monday, September 1, 2014 by Joseph Agbi Leave a Comment

Grace and Mercy

By David Agbi

Hebrews 10, Hebrews 12

Both mercy and grace are attributes of God which he bestows freely on mankind according to his own will. However, the question is often asked; what is the difference between mercy and grace?

Imagine if you were in school and you are getting back an exam. Some are nervous, some are excited. When your classmates have their exams handed back to them, there are various emotions. Some are happy and some are sad. When you get your exam back, you receive an F. However, your teacher says that he will let you redo the exam so you can obtain a mark better than an F. Another solution though is that he gives a Staples gift card along with a chance to redo your exam. These solutions are examples of mercy and grace being shown to you.

Mercy and grace are often used interchangeably when, in fact, they are not the same. Mercy, in my opinion, is not receiving something that you do deserve (for your own good). For Christians, this means that we would not be punished for our sins because God had mercy upon us, but only if we admit our sins and ask for forgiveness. If we do so, our slate is wiped clean! This occurred to many people in times past, including David (2 Samuel 11). David, after committing adultery with Bathsheba, even attempted to cover up his sins by trying to force Uriah to lie with Bathsheba and when Uriah refused, he put Uriah on the forefront of the battle so he could die (which he did) which would allow David to marry Bathsheba. He should have died for his sin (2 Samuel 12: 5-12). However, the Lord had mercy on him because he asked for forgiveness. Another example would be King Ahab. We all know he was a wicked king and when he wanted the field of Naboth the Jezreelite (1 Kings 22: 1-14), when Naboth didn’t give/sell the field to him, Ahab allowed Jezebel to write in his name and in his name, Jezebel stated that Naboth should be slain. He was to be punished, however, because Ahab humbled himself before God and asked for forgiveness (he put sackcloth upon himself and fasted) (1 Kings 22: 18 – 29), he was forgiven, even with all the evil that he did in his lifetime (however, his son was punished for Ahab’s actions). With all these actions, there was a punishment that was to be charged to them, however, God forgave these people because they admitted their sins and asked for forgiveness. Therefore, admittance is a key part to God forgiving your sins.

I pray that God will give us a humble heart to be able to admit our sins, so that we may be forgiven, in Jesus Name.

Grace, however, is receiving something that we do not deserve (unmerited favour). This is the main focal point of Christianity as the classical example of grace is when Jesus came down for every one of us, so that our sins would be forgiven. God was longsuffering to us, not only by giving us time to repent, but also suffering long on the cross. He wanted us not to perish, but to come to repentance (2 Peter 2:9) and so that everyone should have eternal life (John 3:16). Many others received or were shown grace such as Noah, as he found grace in the Lord’s eyes, as he walked with God (Genesis 6:8 – 9). Because of this, he was saved and he was part of one of the seven main covenants that God established with mankind (Genesis 9). Also, going back to David, when he committed adultery with Bathsheba, he received not only mercy, but also grace when God gave him another son, Solomon (2 Samuel 12:24), who would eventually be the next king of Israel. However, both of these situations cannot be compared to the grace that we received from God. Jesus coming down for us was both mercy and grace that was bestowed upon us. We did not deserve to be saved, as we had fallen short of the glory of God in the Garden of Eden (Romans 3:23), however, his coming allowed for the remittance of sins. Also, because Jesus came, there is now no condemnation for us Christians, as now we walk after the Spirit instead of after the flesh (Romans 8:1) and are no more servants to sin, but are free in him (John 7:34-36). However, just because God bestowed grace on us, it does not mean we should continue in sin (Romans 6:1-2) nor do we frustrate the grace that God has given to us (Galatians 2:21). I pray that we will be able to recognize the grace that God has given to us so that we will not frustrate the grace of God, or grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30) in Jesus Name.

Finally, to conclude, it is important to realize that the Old Testament is based on mercy and the law (Mosaic Covenant) as those are connected. However, the New Testament and the world that we are living in today, is based on grace in the Lord Jesus. This does not mean that there was no grace in the Old Testament, or vice versa. However, grace is better than the law and mercy, because the law was only a shadow of things to come, and by it, the sins were not taken away, but were instead remembered (Hebrews 10 1-4). However, with the grace of God, also came the new covenant, with the Spirit that gives life, unlike the law which killed (2 Corinthians 3:6).

Because of Jesus Christ and the period of grace that preceded his coming, we shall not be lacking (Psalm 23:1), our needs are taken care of (Philippians 4:19) and because God the Father did not spare His Son for us so that we may have eternal life, we also will be given all things freely (Romans 8:32).
I pray that we shall receive grace and mercy from God to guide us and be a lamp to us (Psalm 119:105), in every area of our lives that may displease him or that is lacking in the Name of Jesus.

Arise and Shine!

Saturday, July 12, 2014 by Esther Agbi Leave a Comment

Arise and Shine!

Luke 15:1- 32 “I will arise and go…..”

I want to take a closer look at the word ‘arise’. This is the word people use now and then without having to think very deeply. A young child I suppose would understand when you ask him/her to rise.

For you to rise, it either means you were not in an upstanding position or you are not where you need to be at a certain time. It implies that there has to be a positional change. The position you are arising from could be a lying down one, sitting, low levels or general dissatisfaction or a desire to simply have an upward change in position. The Lord shall give us a positive positional change in Jesus Name.

From this passage above, The Lord told us the story of how the younger brother of two siblings took his portion of his dad’s inheritance and went away to a far country. Having been there for a period of time, he squandered the money until he became a pauper, eating what the animals he was caring for would eat. He did this for as long as he could until it dawned on him to arise and go to his father to apologize.

It is one thing to realize that you need to arise. Something must follow that action. No one arises and remains in the same position or even stand still. You have to do something. The prodigal son came to his senses, he arose and what followed? He went to his father.

You and I have to look inwards, examine our lives to see what we need to arise from. It could be a lackadaisical attitude to things generally. Is it a ‘besetting sin’ (Heb. 12:1) as the Bible calls it? It could even be our spiritual, emotional or even financial conditions. What is that thing you are dissatisfied with? It is time for you to arise from it and have an action plan.

The action plan for the prodigal son was to arise and go to his father. What is yours?

It is so amazing to me what followed next. The desire of the son was to ask for forgiveness, then probably his father would hire him as one of his servants. His father gave him more than he anticipated.

The father ran and met the son on the way, made a great feast for him on his return, placed the best robe on him and even shoes on his feet. He was interested in his son’s whole being. His father even gave him a ring to put on. What a beautiful sight! Why don’t you rise up and go to God, your Father and He will meet you on the way to welcome you. I pray the Lord would beautify your life with His goodies just as this son was transformed into beauty. He would give you much more than you deserve or expect.

1 Corinth 2:9 ‘Eye hath not seen nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man the things which God hath prepared for them that love him’

John 15:15 ‘I no longer call you servants……..Instead I have called you friends. We shall truly be His friends in Jesus name.
In any area where we have lost the glory of the lord, He is willing to restore us back to glory as we acknowledge our sins and come to Him in humility.

Arise, shine for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. (Isaiah 60:1)

I pray that the light of the Lord upon us will cause our faces to shine and we would reflect His glory at all times in Jesus name. Amen.

Prayer:
Oh Lord, Forgive me my wrong doings. I arise and come to you in humble submission, in Jesus name.

What is He telling you?

Thursday, July 3, 2014 by Esther Agbi Leave a Comment

What is He telling you?

John 5: 1-11

When I read this passage recently, some salient points came to light.

This passage makes us understand that this man at the pool of Bethesda had been there for 38 years.

It is a pretty long time by all standards to be in a mess or difficult situation as his. He may have been mocked at, made jest of, deserted by friends and family. He never knew that his day of redemption was very close.

Jesus is omniscient. He knew that this man had been there for a long time, and walked straight to him.

There may have been many other people by that same pool with different issues and problems, but The Lord picked him.

No matter the situation or condition you are facing, no matter the length of time it has taken, Jesus knows it all, and your own day of recovery and restoration is closer than you have ever anticipated in Jesus Name. Just as He picked this man at the pool, I pray you will find favour before God and He will bring solution to that problem.

Jesus asked the man a question…”do you want to be made whole?” I believe He is also asking each and every one of us today a question.  Your question may be different from mine.

Coming back to this man, do you notice that he did not answer the question directly? I thought the simple answer would have been Yes or No. That was not the case. In his own words,” Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me”

Are we answering the questions that God is asking us or are we like the man by the pool rambling away with inconsequential details? Or are we making excuses why we cannot give a Yes or No answer?

….excuses like, if I had started doing this or that while I was much younger, how I wish my mortgage is all done, how old am I now, that boss in the office, will I continue to work with him this way and for how long, that man coming to the pharmacy where I work provokes me all the time, how do I deal with him or make the situation better?….

Remember Phillip’s story. (John 6: 5-14). Jesus was only expressing His concerns for food for the people. The disciples brought in their own worries and excuses .The question asked by Jesus was” where can we buy bread?”(The message Bible) The answer from Phillip was “Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little” (King James Bible)

The man at the pool did not answer the question directly but Jesus was merciful to him and listened to his ramblings.

Sometimes we miss our opportunity this way. The lord will have mercy on us all in Jesus name.

In John 5: 8, Jesus told the man “Rise up, take up your bed and walk” He obeyed what Jesus told him to do. There was resolution to the problem. Peace and joy came to him.

Jesus is telling you something today. He is also telling me something. What he is saying to me might be different from what he is saying to you because our conditions and situations may be different.

Be calm so you can hear what he is telling you. You may not hear his voice in the quake, fire or turbulence.

May we be quiet in our spirit to hear what he is telling us to do so that we shall have joy and gladness of heart.

This shall be our portion in Jesus name. Amen.

Prayer:

  1. Oh Lord, let your voice be clear to me when you speak.
  2. Grant me grace to be obedient to you Lord.

Worries? Where is Jesus?

Worries? Where is Jesus?

1Pet. 5:7

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

From the passage above, we are admonished to bring our cares and place them on Jesus.

What do we mean by cares? Cares could be considered as worries, concerns, distress, disturbances, distractions or anything that steals away your peace.

When I had my baby boy in 2001 in the hospital, there were so many companies representatives who came around with samples of their products. Varied products ranging from diapers, baby formulas, education insurance and the like. They were soliciting for buyers, promoting different brand names, with the intention of moving you from potential buyer to actual customer.

A brand new baby in the arms of his Mom or Dad is usually very relaxed. Do you think he cares about anything or many things like mortgages, education fees, examinations, type of diapers to wear, doctors appointments and getting there on time or late? Your guess is as good as mine.

On the contrary, it is the parents who are worried about the things to be done for the baby.

When you also watch adults transferring babies from one person’s arm to another, it is done with great care so that the baby does not fall down or get injured in the process.

Let’s picture ourselves as the baby in the large arms of the lord Jesus. He is like the parent in this picture. We should be relaxed and not be carried away or consumed by worries and cares around us.

Jesus is concerned about us. When we are in difficulty, we tend to ask, where is Jesus? He has been there all these while. We are sometimes too busy to give him audience until we are over whelmed with issues.

The lord will not allow issues to overwhelm us in Jesus name.

Let Jesus speak peace to any roaring storm in your lives and mine today, just as he did to the raging sea.(Matt 8: 23-27)

“Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go he’s the one who will keep you on track” Prov.3:6 (Message Bible)

Prayer

Oh Lord, speak your peace to every raging storm in my life in Jesus Name. Amen.

Oh Lord, please address all my worries and concerns in Jesus name. Amen.

NET WORTH

Saturday, May 10, 2014 by Joseph Agbi Leave a Comment

NET WORTH
God is a wise investor. He created the heaven and the earth which demonstrates His awesome power and majesty. However, His greatest investment was man. He created man in His own image and likeness, breathed into Adam’s nostrils; hence every soul is priceless to Him [Genesis chapter 1].

The soul of man is priceless. However, after death every soul will be valued by God to determine if it was worth His investment. The good souls will be harvested into His kingdom while the rejects will have their portion in hell fire. It is that serious! We determine the fate of our souls here on earth.

Here on earth, the forces of darkness seek to destroy people’s lives as their ultimate goal is to populate hell, but God provided for our redemption through the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus Christ [John 3:16].

The sum total of the worth of someone to God at death is the fear of God that was in the person’s heart, how wise the person was, the love shown to others and how the person’s life fostered the cause of God’s kingdom.

Paraphrased Jesus said, “Someone’s life or net worth does not consist in the abundance of things the person has” (Luke 12:15].

All souls are valuable to God while alive but at death God weighs or judges the soul. Death is the final curtain in the stage of life which covers one scene and opens another. How prepared are you to face your maker!

Call upon Him today and ask for forgiveness through the blood of Jesus, which provides assurance for your salvation. Only then will you be a useful vessel as you live your life daily to please Him and do the work of His kingdom.

Prayer Point
Oh Lord, open my spiritual eyes and quicken my understanding in Jesus name.
